First Workshop in the Project

The workshop “Mechanism of plant pest interaction – discovery and characterization” was held on 26.10.2012 at Warsaw University of Life Sciences, Faculty of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture. The event was financed from the founds of the “Warsaw Plant Health Initiative” 7th EU Framework Programme (FP7-REGPOT-2012-1-286093). This was first event planned by Work Package 6 of this project. The organizing committee included Marek Koter, Anita Wiśniewska, Mirosław Sobczak, Magdalena Święcicka, Mateusz Matuszkiewicz, Waldemar Skowron, Dominika Szymura and Urszula Krasieńko working under supervision of Marcin Filipecki, WP6 leader.

First Workshop

The lecturers were from the leading European universities and institutes: Barbara Karpińska (University of Leeds, UK), Magdalena Krzymowska (Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Poland), Abdelnaser Elashry (University of Bonn, Germany), Vivian Blok (James Hutton Institute, UK), Tina Kyndt (Ghent University, Belgium), Krzysztof Wieczorek (BOKU, Austria), and Małgorzata Kiełkiewicz-Szaniawska (Warsaw University of Life Sciences, Poland).

Workshop was opened with welcome addresses by Professor Kazimierz Lenart (Chairman of Rectors Board for Cooperation with Industry), Professor Zbigniew Dąbrowski (Project coordinator) and Marcin Filipecki (WP6 leader). The lectures were focused on the interaction of plants with insects, nematodes and microbes, with particular emphasis on identifying effectors and signaling pathways triggered in the host plant. The detailed Workshop programme can be found below.

The workshop attracted attention of 71 participants (mainly young people) from several Polish research institutions working on plant disease resistance and pest biology. The discussions and personal contacts were extended on coffee brakes. Workshop was highly successful and gained a substantial visibility.
